1. Job Function

The mission of the Emirates Diplomatic Academy (EDA) is to build capabilities to meet the UAE’s foreign policy objectives through providing accredited academic programmes and best-in-class training. In addition, it aims to advance the understanding of diplomacy and international relations through insightful thought leadership and impactful research and analysis.

EDA currently delivers a Postgraduate Diploma in UAE Diplomacy and International Relations, as well as a Master of Arts in International Relations and Diplomacy. The Academy is set to introduce a new Master of Arts in Humanitarian Action and Development shortly.

The Academy is seeking to appoint a Dean, who will:

  • Provide leadership for the Academic Department’s faculty and staff to support the delivery of ambitious performance objectives and enable their continuous professional growth.
  • Oversee the development, accreditation and delivery of high-quality postgraduate academic programmes that are tailored to the needs of EDA’s stakeholders.
  • Lead EDA’s overall engagement with its students across academic programmes and ensure that they benefit from a first-class and well-rounded learning experience.
  • Develop purposeful, sustainable collaborations and/or partnerships with other academic institutions within the UAE and overseas.

2. Key Responsibilities/Duties

Strategy and Planning

  • Contribute to the development of EDA’s overall strategy and growth, and ensure a coherent approach across its Academic, Executive Training and Research Departments.
  • Lead all planning and operational activities of the Academic Department, including its budget and performance objectives, and ensure the departmental plan is aligned with EDA’s wider strategic plan.
  • Take responsibility for the efficient implementation of academic policies and procedures.
  • Lead the continuous development of academic programmes to ensure they deliver optimal and relevant learning outcomes for EDA’s students and stakeholders, while also managing any relevant accreditation processes.
  • Engage with external stakeholders of EDA’s academic programmes, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, to ensure the programmes meet their needs.
  • Actively participate in the Faculty Hiring Committee, the Faculty Review Committee, the Senior Management Committee, the Academic Affairs Committee, and other committees, as required.
  • Ensure effective coordination with EDA’s Executive Training and Research Departments
  • Develop and implement EDA’s strategy to internationalise its academic programmes, including through building purposeful partnerships and seeking international accreditation.
  • Build and maintain relations with the UAE’s educational authorities and ensure EDA’s full compliance with relevant educational standards.

Managing academic programmes

  • Oversee the admission process for students in the academic programmes.
  • Oversee the scheduling and allocation of courses for each semester and manage the process to decide on the allocation of extra-curricular activities in the students’ programmes.
  • Manage academic programmes efficiently to meet the highest standards of teaching and ethical behaviour.
  • Oversee the consistent implementation of quality assurance procedures across the academic programmes.
  • Lead EDA’s engagement with the Student Council and take steps to ensure an optimal learning environment for the students of the academic programmes.
  • Manage the planning of overseas study trips as part of the academic programmes.
  • Oversee the process of evaluating students in the academic programmes and ensure a consistent and comprehensive approach to evaluation.
  • Oversee the plans and operations of the library to ensure the availability of appropriate resources for EDA’s students and researchers.

Teaching and research

  • Contribute to teaching in the academic programmes, to the extent that it is compatible with other responsibilities.
  • Publish research, either with EDA or with external publishers, to the extent that it is compatible with other responsibilities.

People Management

  • Take responsibility for the performance management, mentoring and professional development of faculty members and other Academic Department staff, including Student Affairs and the library.
  • Inspire and motivate faculty and staff to deliver high quality performance in all areas.
  • Ensure academic faculty produces high-quality scholarship that is published in reputable outlets
  • Promote a collaborative working environment to maintain and enhance the quality of the student learning experience and the overall knowledge ecosystem.
  • Ensure that faculty have an appropriate workload that includes teaching responsibilities as well as research and service.
  • Lead the process of recruiting new academic faculty and staff, as required.

3. Job Specification

Education

  • PhD degree from a reputable and internationally accredited university.
  • Academic background in a field associated with international relations and diplomacy.

Relevant Experience

  • A minimum experience of 10 years that includes progressively responsible management experience in an academic environment.
  • The candidate should have served as Associate Professor or Professor in a previous role.
  • Strong record of published scholarship as well as of teaching in higher education.

Skills

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, encompassing the ability to work collegially as a member of a team and the ability to engage effectively with students and senior external stakeholders.
  • Strong organisational skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required and fluency in Arabic is a significant advantage.
