SDG Centre of Excellence for the Arab Region

The Sustainable Development Goals Centre of Excellence for the Arab Region (SDGCAR) is a knowledge hub for this region. Launched in late 2018, the SDGCAR works with knowledge partners, governments, civil society, youth and businesses in the Arab countries to support the achievement of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and implementation of the Paris Agreement on climate change.

The SDGCAR serves as a convening point for SDG activities throughout the Arab region. In collaboration with universities and knowledge partners, the centre seeks to catalyse educational, research, and policy advising in support of the SDGs throughout the Arab region. The centre hosts events and training workshops that bring together various stakeholders from the knowledge, policy and practice communities to exchange knowledge and information and to accelerate progress towards the SDGs. It also helps promote Arab leadership in the global effort to achieve the SDGs through high-impact studies and high-level events.

The SDGCAR works in close collaboration with the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), a global network promoting practical solutions for sustainable development operating since 2012 under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General. The SDSN comprises more than 800 universities, research centres and other knowledge institutions worldwide. It is governed by a Leadership Council and managed by a global secretariat. The SDGCAR links with a global network of SDSN-affiliated regional SDG centres of excellence in Rwanda, China, Malaysia and Colombia.

Hosted at the Emirates Diplomatic Academy in Abu Dhabi, the SDGCAR contributes to the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in two ways:

  • Serving as a hub for knowledge and resources on education, training and policy-oriented research, with a focus on region-specific challenges and solutions to achieve the SDGs.
  • Furthering understanding of the role of diplomacy, international cooperation and partnerships in supporting sustainable development and the SDGs worldwide.

In its initial year of operation, the SDGCAR will be engaging in various activities, including facilitating e-learning resources in Arabic, tracking progress in SDG implementation in the region’s countries, providing training workshops in areas such as climate change negotiations and water diplomacy, and supporting networking among SDG-oriented knowledge institutions in the region.

Please note that any available positions at the SDGCAR, including internship opportunities, will be announced on these pages. At the moment we do not have any open job vacancies, but we warmly welcome all expressions of interest in collaboration, including on concrete projects or initiatives, and in particular from knowledge institutions in the 22 Arab countries or outside the region working on the Arab countries. We also welcome expressions of interest in supporting the centre.
