Emirates Diplomatic Academy (EDA), the UAE’s leading international relations and diplomatic institution, today hosted Dr Mohamed Al-Kuwaiti, Executive Advisor at the Signals Intelligence Agency (SIA) – formerly the National Electronic Security Authority (NESA), for a lecture on ‘The UAE Cyber Security Framework’.
Taking place as part of the Academy’s ‘International Security and Conflict Resolution’ course, the talk aimed to enhance students' knowledge of cyber security and highlight its role in ensuring the safety of a nation’s population in our increasingly digitalised world. With cyberspace becoming the next battlefield, cyber security is key to defending a country’s interests, and hence a priority for public diplomacy.
Dr Al-Kuwaiti discussed the importance of developing cyber security standards for technologies such as the Internet of Things, cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI). He also outlined some of the industry’s global challenges, including the evolving techniques used in data theft, psychological operations (PSYOP), piracy and cyberattacks.
Furthermore, he called on countries to share information and collaborate in adopting a proactive approach in addressing emerging risks, strengthening cyber security awareness and establishing educational mechanisms.
Dr Al-Kuwaiti said: "Those who control the code can easily control the world. Hence, with governments increasingly moving towards smart cities and services, better awareness of cyber security, information security and the engagement of human resources are central to maintaining and enhancing overall social and economic security.”
Commending the pioneering status of EDA, he added: "The Emirates Diplomatic Academy is truly a centre of excellence. It gives me great pleasure to have this critical interaction and to share my experiences with aspiring future diplomats, all of whom I am certain will go on to become the best representatives of our country."
For his part, His Excellency Bernardino León, Director General of EDA, said: "We are honoured to host such a distinguished speaker at the Academy. I am confident that this valuable lecture has provided our students with a broader understanding of the evolving challenges facing us in the 21st century. Talks such as this one play a crucial role in redefining the implementation of diplomacy around the world."
His Excellency added: "At EDA, we seek to equip graduates with the knowledge and skills to face the challenges of the future, and give them the capability of finding innovative solutions to achieve the soft power goals and interests of the UAE."
