The EDA has published a new policy paper, titled ‘The EU’s External Migration Policy and Implications for the MENA Region’. The paper is authored by Dr Silvia Colombo, who is a Senior Fellow in the Mediterranean and Middle East Programme at Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI) in Rome.
This policy brief takes as a starting point the fact that the sharp increase in refugees seeking asylum in Europe has pulled the European Union (EU) into the global humanitarian migration crisis. It has forced EU member states to take urgent action, though the EU has not yet come up with adequate ideas as to how best manage the issue, largely displaying a reactive and nationally-oriented attitude.
The author assesses recent developments in the EU’s external migration policy and looks at the implications of these policies for the EU itself as well as for the regional (in)stability of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
