Global security in the context of the 21st century came under close scrutiny as former US Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel led a public lecture on the topic, ‘New World Order’ on April 25, 2016. The lecture was hosted by Emirates Diplomatic Academy, the leading integrated foreign policy, academic and research centre in the region, at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center.
The session was organised as part of the Academy’s efforts to highlight innovative experiences in international relations and offer significant learning experience for EDA students. It enabled the students of the Academy and a distinguished group of diplomats and government officials present at the event to gain deeper insights on the fast changing developments taking place in the area of global security. Taking a broad perspective of the realities of the future, the lecture highlighted the relevance of adopting an integrated approach to security issues to meet the challenges of the new world order.
Commenting on the lecture, Secretary Hagel said: “Security is as dominant and dynamic a challenge as it has ever been. But today it is more complicated. A world of integrated security and economic interests is the reality of the 21st century.”
On the occasion, Bernardino León, Director General of EDA, said: “The UAE has been at the forefront of efforts to promote peace in the world, and has been a key contributor to regional security and economic prosperity. The public lecture by Secretary Chuck Hagel at Emirates Diplomatic Academy offered another distinct platform for the Academy to share expert insights into the latest developments and trends in international relations. Events such as this highlight Emirates Diplomatic Academy’s distinct role as a prominent entity that supports the UAE’s foreign policy goals and a key thought leader in international diplomacy.”
Chuck Hagel was the 24th Secretary of Defense of United States of America, serving from February 2013 to February 2015. During his tenure, he directed significant steps to modernize America’s partnerships and alliances, advance the rebalance in Asia-Pacific, bolster support for European allies, and enhance defense cooperation in the Middle East while overseeing the end of America’s combat mission in Afghanistan. Hagel launched the Defense Innovation Initiative to better prepare the Pentagon for future threats, and enacted comprehensive reforms to the Nuclear Enterprise and Military Health system. He is also the author of the book, “America: Our Next Chapter”, an examination of the current state of our nation that provides substantial proposals for the challenges of the 21st century.
As the leading integrated academic centre in the region, EDA combines academic programmes and training, research and analysis to highlight the UAE’s leading role in international relations. The Academy conducts in-depth studies to build a knowledge base in the field of international relations and diplomacy and support the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation and decision-makers in the UAE.
