H.E Mohamed Issa Abushahab
Director - Policy Planning Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation
Since August 2013, H.E Mohamed Abushahab has been the Director of Policy Planning in the UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. In this role, he leads a department that reports to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and provides briefing, analysis and advice on UAE foreign policy issues.
Between July 2012 and June 2013, Mr. Abushahab was also Acting Director of the Department of American & Pacific Affairs. In this capacity, he managed the bilateral relations between the UAE and countries in North, Central and South America.
Prior to that, he headed the International Climate Change Division within the Directorate of Energy & Climate Change where he led a number of delegations to the UNFCCC’s climate change negotiations, managed the UAE’s engagement in the Clean Energy Ministerial, and represented the UAE in the G-20 Clean Energy & Energy Efficiency Working Group.
Mr. Abushahab previously spent 5 years at the Permanent Mission of the UAE to the United Nations in New York. Among his responsibilities during this period were the representation of the UAE on the Second Committee, which dealt with economic, financial, development, energy, and climate change issues, and the First Committee, which dealt with disarmament and international security issues.
Mr. Abushahab received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the American University in Washington, D.C. He is married to Amna Al Muhairy who is currently the Deputy Director of the Human Rights Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and also served at the Permanent Mission of the UAE to the UN. They have two sons, Hamad and Sultan, and one daughter, Alya.
